12 Things To Do While At Sheffield University

The University of Sheffield offers a great student experience – and there is plenty to do here.  The city of Sheffield is a great location to spend your student years! There are literally tens of thousands of student’s here! Whether you’re an Undergraduate, Postgraduate or even just a visiting student, you will have an enjoyable time! However, unfortunately the time will pass quickly. Yet this list of different things to do should given you some inspiration to get the most out of your time at the University. This list ranges from things such as landmarks to see, places to travel, and most importantly, graduation! Read on!



As fun as the library is, there is a lot to do elsewhere!



1.  Explore The City Of Sheffield!


Sheffield is an amazing city – and as mentioned earlier, hosts tens of thousands of student’s. There is so much to see and do in the city. Make sure you venture away from the campus and see other areas. This article features some of the best things to do! But you’ll definitely be able to find hidden gems in the city – whether a bar no one has heard of, a nice park, or something totally different! Being a student city, there is always something to do here!


2. Utilise the Student’s Union

The Student’s Union at the University of Sheffield is definitely worth engaging with. There are a lot of societies to join – from the Advertising and Marketing Society to the Bollywood society – there is certainly something for everyone here! Click here to see a list of all the societies! Societies offer a great chance to make friends and socialise. The SU also runs regular campaigns to support students. For anything advice related, consider the SU too!


3. Enjoy the Nightlife!


Sheffield has a fantastic nightlife! Given the huge amount of students, there are an abundance of places to visit. Whether bars, pubs or nightclubs are your thing – there will be something for you! It is well worth taking time out in the evenings to ‘recharge your batteries’. Student favourites include Plug, Tiger Works, Corporation and The Leadmill among others!


4. Learn About Different Cultures

Sheffield hosts a broad international community – something well worth taking advantage of. This can help you learn about different cultures – which will certainly prove to be interesting. Wherever possible, you should try their cuisine – you might be positively surprised! Either way, this is always something worth doing!

5. Try Out the Sport Facilities


The University boasts fantastic sports facilities – as a student here, you should take advantage of them. Whether you are just a casual player looking for something fun and exercise – or someone looking to compete for the University, it is certainly worth trying something! Societies are an excellent way of trying out sports. Campaigns like the ‘This Girl Can’ week are supported by the SU, and support adoption of sports, especially by female students.


6. Visit the Botanical Gardens


This is something very popular for students to do! The Botanical Gardens host a huge variety of plants, trees, and large green spaces – perfect for relaxing! Going for a walk around the gardens can clear your head when things get stressful. A firm student favourite – visit the bear pit at the gardens and hug a bear. Legend has it you aren’t a fully-fledged Sheffield student without posing for a picture with a bear!


7. Tramlines!

This is practically the Glastonbury of Sheffield! For three glorious days, the city transforms into an entire festival. The atmosphere is great, you can hear loads of cool new music and price-wise – it is much cheaper than any other festival! The festival offers you a chance to listen to music from a variety of genres, while you should also be able to discover new parts of the city!


8. Visit Sheffield Cathedral

One of Sheffield’s oldest buildings and arguably the most beautiful – Sheffield Cathedral – is well worth visiting! It is free to look round, though remember regular religious services will take place. The 1554 Gallery is also present here – meaning you can see a great mix of classic and contemporary art while at the Cathedral.


9. Millennium Gallery

Arguably even better than the 1554 gallery – the Millennium Gallery is well worth a visit too. There are a huge range of arts and crafts here. There are regular exhibitions too that take place here. General admission is free as well – meaning it is something easy to do! It is also open every term day of the year – which is great!


10. Visit Other Parts of the United Kingdom!


The United Kingdom features some incredible cities. Day trips to Manchester, Liverpool and potentially even Leeds are all possible. Meanwhile London can easily be reached by train – and could offer a great spot for a weekend away. For an extended break, consider going further than London – with the likes of Brighton, Reading and Bristol all easy to get too from London!

11. Study Hard!
