The new Education hub at Durham University is getting ever closer – with construction on the brand-new facility now in full swing. The £40m hub will add to the already-impressive portfolio of buildings at the University, and includes several exciting areas that will turn the building into a world-class education centre. The hub will be located at Lower Mountjoy – and is slated for a 2019 opening. Read on for full details.
So what will be included at the hub? There will be a range of lecture theatres, teaching rooms, education laboratories and catering outlets. In one of the highlights of the hub – one classroom will be dedicated to providing a real-time opportunity of students around the world sharing one course. This is an exciting prospect that provides a range of opportunities. This decision is part of a wider strategy for the next decade from Durham University, that is focusing on improving the University, as well as the overall student experience.

The hub received permission in September by Durham County Council. The University believes that as well as improving the student experience, that the hub will also contribute to the local economy – pumping £2m into it annually. The University vacation period will provide many opportunities, while jobs will be created for the initial construction period. There is also scope for further teaching positions too.
