In good news for both current and prospective Plymouth University students, more student accommodation appears likely to appear, with construction on 39 new student flats expected to begin soon. The proposed site for these flats is North Road, located very close to the Plymouth University campus. This would be a highly-convenient location for students, though the plans are subject to approval by Plymouth City Council, and therefore won’t certainly go ahead. Read on for more.
This news comes after a Manchester-based business named North Road East Plymouth Ltd bought the site in question for around £750,000. They plan on knocking down the current site, before replacing it with student flats. The plans involve knocking down current buildings, and have attracted considerable opposition from both local residents and businesses. Permission has yet to be granted by Plymouth City Council, though as the site isn’t part of a conservation area, permission is expected to be granted.
There is always a strong demand for high-quality student accommodation in Plymouth, with many students wanting to remain in hall accommodation, as opposed to risking the pitfalls of renting private accommodation. It is expected that despite the opposition, that the 39 student flats will eventually be constructed. A potential opening time is unknown, though it could be realistic to expect a 2019/20 academic year opening, though construction can sometimes be quicker than this. Whatever the opening time is, more accommodation for students in Plymouth is positive news.
