The University of Lancaster offers a great student experience – with your years at the University sure to provide you with a plethora of memories. Bailrigg, and the wider Lancashire area, hosts many students, making it a great place to study! Whether you’re an undergraduate, postgraduate or visiting student, you will have an enjoyable time! Unfortunately your student years will fly by – but you’ll certainly have enough time to do everything on this list! This article should give you some inspiration to get the most out of your stay at Lancaster. This list ranges from things such as landmarks to see, places to travel to, and most importantly – graduation! Read on!
1. Explore the North of England!
Many people talk about the beauty of the South of England – however the North hosts an abundance of amazing locations. Transport is great in the local area, and many of the UK’s most iconic locations are close to Lancaster. Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle are all easily reached. Consider during your stay to go on day trip’s to these cities – it will be a great decision! The picture above is the ‘Angel of the North’ – a contemporary sculpture found just outside Newcastle – well worth visiting!
2. Utilise the Student’s Union
It is well worth engaging with Lancaster’s Student’s Union. The union offers many activities for students to enjoy, and provide general support for students whenever required. The union helps organise a range of societies too, which are great for making friends, developing new hobbies and interests – and most importantly – to have fun. Societies range from being academic-based to hobby-based – there should be something for everyone. Lancaster’s SU is also good for anything advice-related. 3. Enjoy the Nightlife!
The Lancaster area offers an impressive nightlife! There is an abundance of places to visit in the area. Apothecary Bar and Lounge specialise in cocktails – and is a popular spot for students. Sugarhouse is arguably the most popular student location – being the Student’s Union very own nightclub! Drinks and entry are much cheaper here too than other clubs! Whether bars, pubs or nightclubs are your thing – you can certainly find something! It is well worth taking time out in the evenings to recharge your batteries. Trips to other cities for a night-out is possible too!
4. Learn about Different Cultures!
Lancaster University features a range of nationalities among both students and staff. This diverse range of cultures is something well worth taking advantage of. When we say this, there is no need to find two other people, sit on a piece of lawn somewhere and recreate the corny picture seen on every front cover of a University prospectus. Instead, and jokes aside, try and learn about different cultures, try out a new cuisine style, and just generally make friends! The ability of working with people from different backgrounds is an excellent asset to have!
5. Try Out the Sport Facilities
Lancaster University offers some great sport facilities – as a student here, you should take advantage of them. Whether you are just a casual player playing for fun, wanting to get exercise, or compete for the University – it is something worth trying. For those who do take sport seriously, Lancaster University is part of many BUCS leagues, giving you the chance to compete against other Universities, with many sports featuring competitive teams. As mentioned earlier, societies are an excellent way of trying out sports.
6. Visit Williamson Park
Williamson Park is one of the most picturesque locations in Lancaster! It isn’t too far away from the University – and is the perfect place to relax and take some much needed time out! This green-space is popular with students and the wider community, and there is also an abundance of wildlife to see! On many trails you can see some amazing views – it is well recommended to visit! Consider the Lancaster canal too!
7. Visit Lancaster Castle
One of the most iconic spots in the Lancaster area is Lancaster Castle – well worth the journey! The Castle has an amazing history – with links to the Royal family. The Castle only opened to the public for the first time in 2013 – and it has already proved highly popular. Tours are available, and just general wandering around is interesting!
8. Attend the Roses Tournament!
Lancaster University battle with the University of York once a year in the Varsity event. This is a perfect time to throw your support behind the University, and try and roar them home to victory! Around April/May of each year, Varsity fever takes over the campus – it will be a great occasion!
9. Go to the Beach! (Morecambe beach that is…)
It might not be the most glamorous beach – but the location of Lancaster makes it perfect for you to go to the beach. A short journey across to Morecambe is your best bet – and you can enjoy the coastal area there! This is a great thing to do especially in the summer!
10. Visit Other Parts of the United Kingdom!
The United Kingdom features some incredible cities. Getting around is easy due to the impressive transport network. We’ve already covered the Northern cities, so consider heading South, with London the obvious choice for a potential weekend away. Other recommended locations would be Oxford, Cambridge and Brighton. 11. Study Hard!
While this isn’t as fun as most of the suggestions in this article – this is still a critical element of University! However, what is most important is to get a good work/life balance. By doing this, you’ll be able to harness your mind’s full capabilities – ending in great results! With the University boasting good graduate prospects, your hard work can certainly pay off!
The single most important part of being a student at Lancaster – graduation! This is where your year’s of hard work will pay off – ensure you get to this day!
