13 Things To Do While At The University of York

The University of York is well-known for offering a great student experience – with your years at the University sure to provide you with a plethora of memories. York and the wider Yorkshire area hosts many students, making it a great place to study! Whether you’re an undergraduate, postgraduate or visiting student, you will have an enjoyable time! While your student years will undoubtedly fly by – you should have time to attempt everything on this list! This article should give you some inspiration to get the most out of your stay at the University of York. This list ranges from things such as landmarks to see, places to travel to, and most importantly – graduation! Read on!

1.  Explore the North of England!

Many people talk about the beauty of the South of England – however the North hosts an abundance of amazing locations. Transport is great in the local area, and many of the UK’s most iconic locations are near to York. Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle can all be easily reached. Consider during your stay to go on day trip’s to these cities – it will be a great decision! The picture above is the ‘Angel of the North’ – a contemporary sculpture found just outside Newcastle – well worth seeing.

 

2. Utilise the Student’s Union

It is well worth engaging with the Student’s Union of the University of York! The union offers many activities for students to enjoy, and provides general support whenever required. The union helps organise a range of societies too, which are great for making friends, developing new hobbies and interests – and most importantly – to have fun. Societies range from being academic-based to hobby-based – there should be something for everyone. 3. Enjoy the Nightlife!

The city of York and the surrounding area offer an impressive nightlife for students, with a range of places to visit in the area. ‘Fibbers’ and ‘Bar Lucia’ are two nightspots that are particularly popular with students. Whether bars, pubs or nightclubs are your thing – you can certainly find something! It is well worth taking time out in the evenings to recharge your batteries. Trips to other cities for a night-out is possible too!

 

4. Learn about Different Cultures!

The University of York features a range of nationalities among both students and staff. This diverse range of cultures is something well worth taking advantage of. Try and learn about different cultures, try out a new cuisine style, and just generally make friends! The ability of working with people from different backgrounds is an excellent asset to have!

5. Try Out the Sport Facilities

The University of York offers some impressive sports facilities – as a student here, you should take advantage of them. Whether you are just a casual player playing for fun, wanting to get exercise, or compete for the University – it is something worth trying. For those who do take sport seriously, York is part of many BUCS leagues, giving you the chance to compete against other Universities, with many sports featuring competitive teams. As mentioned earlier, societies are an excellent way of trying out sports.

 

6. Relax at York Museum Gardens

The York Museum Gardens are a firm favourite with students. The Gardens are perfect for an afternoon off, or just general relaxation. Set in the heart of the city centre, and surrounded by St. Mary’s Abbey, this is one of the most tranquil spots in York. The Gardens look at their best in the summer months! For something a little closer to the campus – consider Walmgate Stray!

 

7. Stroll around the York City Walls

The famous York City Walls have protected the city of York for around 2000 years! While you can walk alone, it can be recommended to book a tour – that way you’ll learn all about the history of the Walls! The Walls stretch for around 2 miles, so it might be worth saving up your energy or doing this activity in 2 (or more!) goes.

Escape rooms are a fast-growing trend in the United Kingdom – and they always offer an hour of fun for you and your friends. You have an hour to solve a complex set of codes and riddles to try and ‘escape’ in time. This is a great thing to do with friend’s, and you’ll have a great sense of accomplishment when completed! 9. See Clifford’s Tower

A famous tourist attraction in York – the Clifford Tower has considerable history attached to it. The Tower is the remnants of York Castle. The Tower is located on a mound originally built by none other than William the Conqueror! At the top, stunning views of the city of York and afar can be seen – it is well worth doing at some point! Though we should note entering the Tower incurs a fee!

 

10. Visit York Maze!

You will be sure to have an a-maz(e)-ing time here! The maze is of course the main attraction here, and can be accessed in the summer months. It is a challenging activity for you to do – but like the escape room – once completed, you will be pleased! However it also hosts other events that are worth visiting – including an impressive fireworks display on November 5!

 

11. Visit Other Parts of the United Kingdom!

The United Kingdom features some incredible cities. Getting around is easy due to the impressive transport network. We’ve already covered the Northern cities, so consider heading South, with London the obvious choice for a potential weekend away. Other recommended locations would be Oxford or Brighton – though the possibilities are near-endless. There is a lot to see, the UK features some amazing landmarks! 12. Study Hard!

While this isn’t as fun as most of the suggestions in this article – this is still a critical element of University! However, what is most important is to get a good work/life balance. By doing this, you’ll be able to produce your best work – which should end well! The University has strong graduate prospects – which means your hard work should pay off in the future

 

13. Graduate!

The single most important part of being a student at York – graduation! This is where all of your hard work will finally pay off! It’ll be a proud day for both you and your family, and hopefully it’ll be a memorable day. On your way to graduation, try and complete some of the things suggested on this list!
