Switzerland was part of various Kingdoms in early years – including those of the Alemannia and Burgundy. The ‘Swiss Confederacy’ would form in the years to follow, combining various states. In around 1800, Switzerland would fall victim to Napoleon’s French army. By 1815, Switzerland re-established its independence. The nation had a very brief civil war, but in the aftermath, the nation focused on unity. During the World Wars, Switzerland remained neutral and wasn’t invaded, though several cities were bombed in the Second World War. Switzerland joined the United Nations in 2002. Apart from that, Switzerland as a nation have largely stayed away from alliances, promoting its stability as an independent nation.

Things to Do and See:
Switzerland features many different things to see! Despite being a landlocked nation, Switzerland is famous for its abundance of lakes. Some of these are world-famous, including Lake Geneva. The immediate area surrounding Lake Geneva is known for being picturesque. Lake Constance, Lake Thun, Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano are other well-known lakes. Rhine Falls is Europe’s largest plains waterfall – and again provides picturesque views. For hiking fans, Pilatus is a great spot – offering the chance to scale a mountain. When it snows, the location is also popular. Rigi and Matterhorn are other famous mountains. Kapellbrucke is another popular tourist attraction – it is an iconic sight – being a bridge which is lined with stunning art. There are several museums and parks also available to visit.
