Sri Lanka has an interesting history. The origins of the nation can be traced back over 125,000 years! In the early years of the nation, Sri Lanka was known for its impressive structures. The nation is well known for being under British rule for several years. Great Britain occupied some areas of the nation in 1796 – they referred to the nation as Ceylon. By 1815, Britain gained total control. The British rule would survive several rebellions. It took until 1948 for independence to be proclaimed. In 1972, the nation was renamed Sri Lanka. In the following years, there were many tense moments, with riots, coups and battles taking place. The nation was badly affected by the 2004 Asian tsunami, with 35,000 people killed in Sri Lanka. A Sri Lankan civil war took place from around 1985 to 2009, which again was very bloody. Steps appear to have been taken for stability.
