Austria has an interesting history. What is now present-day Austria was part of the Roman Empire, before falling under control of various groups in subsequent centuries. Austria would engage in various battles around the turn of the 19th Century – first with neighbours Hungary, then with Napoleon’s France. Austria was one of Europe’s super-powers around this time. By 1867, Austria and Hungary had joined forces. Austria-Hungary were part of World War I, ultimately losing alongside Germany. The First Republic of Austria was declared in 1919. Austria would also be a part of World War II. Nazi Germany occupied Austria, and the nation had to wait until the close of the War to be re-established as a sovereign state. Since then, Austria has managed to achieve stabilisation. Austria is well-known for having a high standard of living, and is regularly considered one of the happiest countries in the world to live in. Austria joined the United Nations in 1955, the European Union in 1995 and was a founding member of the OECD.
