Finland has an interesting history. There are traces of human in-habitation in Finland that date back over 100,000 years ago. The early centuries in Finland would be marred by violence with other nations in Northern Europe. During the Protestant Reformation in around the 16th Century, Finland adopted Lutheranism – a sector of Christianity. Severe famine would plague the nation, before an actual plague led to around a third of the Finnish population dying. Wars between Sweden and Russia would affect Finland, with Finland eventually falling under Russian control, and forming part of the Russian Empire. A destructive famine would happen again. Civil War broke out in the 1900s, which culminated in independence. Following the Second World War, Finland was able to strengthen ties with both the Soviet Union and Western superpowers. In recent years, Finland has enjoyed economic growth, stability, and joined the European Union in 1995.
