How Much Will I Pay for My Prescription?

Overview: For many Mental Health conditions, some form of medication can greatly help a recovery, and hopefully – full remission. When a medication is required in the United Kingdom, the system is very simple. Please note that the price for a prescription usually rises each April. All prescriptions are provided by the NHS.

You will pay £8.80 for your prescription when you receive one medication. Even if you are receiving a two-month supply of the same medication, you will still pay the same amount.

In some cases though you will need two different medicines. In this case it would cost £17.60 – which is two times the solo prescription amount.

If you are likely to require ongoing medications, you can purchase a Prescription Prepayment Certificate – which can help you save money in the long run. For instance, a twelve-month certificate costs £104.00 – which saves you money if you normally have monthly prescriptions. This works out at £2 a week – saving you 80p a month and almost £10.00 a year. You can find out more about these certificates here.

Some people don’t have to pay for prescriptions. Anyone over 60, under 18 and in full time education, are pregnant, are an NHS inpatient, or are on some sort of benefits, such as Income support. More information is available here.
