Key Facts: It will take around four to six weeks for a patient to feel the full benefits of Pipotiazine. However, anxiety should lessen rapidly upon consumption of the drug. There are some side effects to Pipotiazine, as mentioned below. Pipotiazine should be used without interruption – you shouldn’t suddenly stop taking the medicine. The medicine should help control your symptoms.

How do they work?: Antipsychotics cannot help cure mental health conditions, but they are usually effective in reducing and controlling some of the symptoms associated with these conditions. These symptoms can include delusions and hallucinations, disturbed thoughts, agitation, mania and violence. The medication works by blocking the action of dopamine. It is believed psychotic episodes are caused by the brain producing too much of the chemical dopamine. The medication also regulates levels of other chemicals that are responsible for regulating mood – such as noradrenaline and serotonin. It is recommended that Pipotiazine is used in conjunction with therapy.

Dosage: As mentioned, Pipotiazine comes in injection form. Pipotiazine will be administered either by a Doctor or a nurse. An injection will take place once every four weeks, with the injection taking place in either the thigh or buttock. The first dose will be 25mg – used as a test to see how your body reacts to the drug. Then, if the test runs well, the normal dose will be 50mg. The maximum monthly dose is 200mg.

You should take Citalopram once a day. It doesn’t upset the stomach, and thus can be taken with or without food. You should take the tablet at the same time each day, but unlike many other antidepressants, there isn’t a set time you should take them. It is recommended you take them in the morning, as otherwise it can be difficult to sleep at times. The usual dose of Citalopram is 20mg a day in adults. Sometimes, a lower dose will be prescribed, especially at the beginning of treatment. The maximum dose per day is 40mg. It can take some time to find the correct dose. A typical treatment course of Citalopram is six months, though a longer treatment course is common.

Side Effects

With each box of Pipotiazine, there will be an information leaflet enclosed. This will provide an exhaustive list of side effects. Side effects from Pipotiazine can last any length of time from just a few days to permanent changes. It is natural to experience some side effects as your body gets used to the medication.

Common side effects of Pipotiazine include a dry mouth, drowsiness, breast enlargement in men, agitation, weight gain and skin rashes (particularly at the injection site).

Serious side effects include suicidal thinking, jaundice, sudden high temperature, fast heartbeat, movement disorders or blood clots. An overdose should be avoided. You should contact your doctor if any of these serious side effects take place.

You should always read the information leaflet that comes with your medication as it will include important information there. You should tell your doctor if you are taking any other medication. You shouldn’t use any other antipsychotic medication with Pipotiazine. Especially do not use Pipotiazine with Clozapine. Do not use any antipsychotic with Tricyclic Antidepressants. Some painkillers, medicines to control your heartbeat, sedatives, antidepressants and anaesthetics are among the medicines to interact poorly with Pipotiazine. Always ask your doctor if you are unsure on combining medicines.

Don’t take Pipotiazine if you have liver or kidney problems, or have a history of heart problems. Exert caution in taking Pipotiazine if you have Parkinson’s Disease, brain damage, breathing problems, glaucoma, are a heavy drinker or are diabetic.

Pipotiazine can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight – exert caution when using this medicine not to be too exposed to the sun. Try and avoid the sun when it hits its strongest in the afternoon.

Alcohol acts as a sedative, therefore it is recommended that anyone taking an antipsychotic stays away from drinking alcohol. Combining Pipotiazine with recreational drugs is also not recommended.

Pipotiazine is not recommended in pregnancy or the breastfeeding stage. It is believed that Pipotiazine can cause withdrawal symptoms in breastfed babies.
