Two Men Arrested over Vile Racist Chant at Nottingham Trent University

Upset

Two 18-year old men have been arrested following vile racist chanting that was directed at a female undergraduate student at Nottingham Trent University. The University has also subsequently suspended the duo. Footage of the incident was captured and shared by the victimised student – Rufaro Chisango. Chants directed at Chisango included ‘we hate blacks’. As seen below, the footage was shared via Twitter. The video includes some distressing words and footage.

Two 18-year old men have been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offences – Nottinghamshire Police have confirmed. The two individuals were also suspended by the University. However many have criticised the slow response of the University to such a distressing incident. Chisango says she informed her halls of residence reception team of the incident on Monday, though by Wednesday she hadn’t heard anything. The footage was shared, which led to a public outcry.

Nottingham Trent University ‘Chills Free Speech’ on Campus, Says Study

A University campus is supposed to be a location that allows students and staff to engage in freedom of speech – without having policies or rules in place to limit this. However, a recent report by Spiked Online has suggested that very few Universities in the United Kingdom actually actively promote freedom of speech, with many supposedly blocking free speech from their campus. In the report, Nottingham Trent University was given an ‘amber’ ranking – denoting it has ‘chilled free speech through intervention’.

A University campus should be somewhere where freedom of speech can prosper

The report was the latest edition of Spiked Online‘s annual free speech rankings, with 115 Universities being ranked. They examine any policies or actions that the University or Student Union has, and analyses the threat each poses to freedom of speech on campus. These can include specific speakers being banned, censorship and other policies. The organisation subsequently rank each University using a traffic-light system. Red denotes the institution is ‘hostile to free speech’. Amber suggests it ‘chills free speech’, with Green being the best. Click here for a full explanation.

The study suggests there is certainly room for improvement at Nottingham Trent. The study suggested that the University and Students’ Union ‘collectively create an environment that chills free speech’. The report hands the University a green rank. However the Students Union’ was given an amber rank – due to placing restrictions on ‘offensive’ speech. This averages out at an amber rating. This marks the fourth successive year that Nottingham Trent has been awarded an amber mark in the report.

Only seven of the 115 institutions were given a green rating. Among them were the University of Buckingham, Robert Gordon University, Trinity St. David, and the University of Winchester. No traditional, long-established University attained a green rating. Unfortunately, 63 Universities were given a ‘red’ ranking. 45 Universities attained an amber rating. It should be noted that some have disputed the accuracy and methodology of these findings. Yet by using a consistent model, these rankings can certainly be considered reliable to analyse.

So a mixed result for Nottingham Trent University – with some positives and some negatives. A University is somewhere that freedom of speech should be encouraged and harnessed to help students debate and achieve their potential. It is therefore disappointing to see so many Universities criticised for their stance on freedom of speech. Yet creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable is equally important. Sometimes it seems these two elements cannot function alongside one another.

Inquest Concludes Nottingham Trent Student Death was ‘Tragic Waste of Life’

The death of a Nottingham Trent University student has been called a ‘tragic waste of life’. An inquest concluded that Fuad Hassan – who was out celebrating his 21st birthday – died from a lethal combination of drink and drugs. The coroner in the case also criticised the actions of a friend – who took a picture of Hassan and posted it on social media. This tragic case resulted in the loss of a life, and is particularly poignant due to Hassan celebrating his 21st birthday – which ended in tragedy. Read on for the full story.

Paramedics were unable to revive Mr. Hassan

Hassan had been going out for his 21st birthday with friends. He was sharing a house with other students at the time. Over the course of the evening of his birthday, he engaged in heavy drinking. He had bought a bottle of Cognac, with the inquest into his death hearing that a friend felt he was drinking ‘too fast’. Following the night out, he and friends returned to their home on Burns Street, Nottingham, where he was placed on a sofa. Friends put him on one side in case he was sick.

His friends would later go out again. At some point, Hassan allegedly moved to lie on the floor. Yet in doing this, he partially blocked the front door. A friend took a picture of Hassan lying on the floor, before posting it on social media. This decision, though not meant to be malicious, was criticised by the coroner. It appears that Hassan’s friends didn’t understand the gravity of the situation, judging by their actions. At some point however, it became clear there was a serious problem with Hassan.

Paramedics were called to the house. Despite their best efforts, Hassan died. Tests taken in the aftermath found that Hassan was almost four times over the legal drink-drive limit. However, the human body – especially when used to consuming this amount of alcohol – can cope with this level of alcohol in the system. Yet unfortunately, the tests also revealed that the student had taken a range of drugs – including cocaine – during the night. When combined with alcohol, the range of drugs proved deadly.

This was a tragic case, and serves a reminder of the danger of drinks and drugs. Summing up the case, the coroner stated Hassan’s death was ‘drugs and alcohol related’. It is important to know your limits, and for friends to especially show care in these situations. The fact that Hassan was celebrating his 21st birthday only makes this more poignant. A very, very tragic case.

Nottingham Community Urged to be ‘Vigilant’ After Indecent Exposure Reports

The Nottingham community has been urged to be ‘vigilant’ by Nottinghamshire Police, following repeated reports of a man exposing himself in the city. In unfortunate news, a man is said to be indecently exposing himself, with a recent report alleging that on one such occasion, an incident took place near the city centre campus of Nottingham Trent University. Following numerous reports of indecent exposure, Nottinghamshire Police have responded, as seen above. Read on for full details on this story.

Residents of Nottingham have been told to be ‘vigilant’ in light of recent reports of a man indecently exposing himself

Over the past several days, Nottinghamshire Police have received several reports of a man indecently exposing himself in the Nottingham area. It is presumed that the same man is responsible for the multiple reports. While there are limited details as to specifics, it is certainly something to be wary of. The intentions of the man are unknown at this point. The most recent incident was reported to have taken place on Dryden Street – located worryingly close to Nottingham Trent University. This was reported on Monday evening.

It is also apparent that this isn’t necessarily something that will have been reported to the Police every time it happened. It is therefore likely that this has happened on more occasions than reported. The man in question is described as being in his 40s, short, and of a large build, he has been seen to wear dark clothing. If anyone sees something similar happening, Nottinghamshire Police have asked you to contact 101 – the non-emergency number. It is believed investigations are ongoing.

As mentioned above, Police have warned the Nottingham community to be vigilant in light of these reports. It is especially important for students to be aware of these reports, with one report suggesting an incident took place in the vicinity of the Nottingham Trent Campus. It can be advised not to walk alone in the evenings, and to walk in groups wherever possible. While malice may not be the intent of the individual in this case, it is still something concerning for residents.

Revealed: How Much Did Nottingham Trent Students Spend on Library Fines?

Figures obtained by UniEel have revealed huge fines being spent at University’s across the United Kingdom at library’s. Part of our ongoing study focused on Nottingham Trent University, where it was revealed students spent £67,000 on library fines during the 2016-17 academic year. This figure is above the average figure seen across UK institutions. Putting this figure into perspective – with approximately 28,000 students at Nottingham Trent, this equates to a spend of around £2.39 per student. It is worth noting that this figure purely takes into account fines for overdue items. Other fines, such as those for lost or damaged books/resources, have not been considered.

Students have been spending heavily on Library fines!

This figure will come as a disappointment for students. While there is no doubting how great the student experience at Nottingham Trent is (2nd best in the UK to be precise!), this additional cost is harsh on students, especially given the rising costs of education. It should be noted that not all University’s adopt a fine system – with the University of Westminster an example of an institution that instead temporarily bans students from taking out books. This would surely offer enough of a deterrent. It is often unclear where the money gained from library fines ends up. The University doesn’t include printing costs in the library in the tuition fee – one of several things we expected!

Students are urged to return their library books on time – in order to avoid the scale of fines we’ve seen emanate from the 2016-17 academic year. There is no denying how frustrating it is when the book you have reserved hasn’t been returned on time, but the library fine system is clearly not working. Lower fines, or a switch to the before-mentioned banning process could be recommended. Figures seen at UK institutions is likely to prompt discussion regarding the fairness of library fines.
